New Product/Vendor Spotlight: LDG Electronics & Its AAF5 Analog Audio Filter

A new piece of amateur radio gear from the team at LDG Electronics is always exciting news at DX Engineering, where we carry more than 35 items from the company that proudly bills itself as “An American Mom and Pop Ham Shop.”

Before we take a look at its latest offering (the AAF5 Analog Audio Filter), here’s a little history about LDG Electronics:

In 1995, LDG pioneered the automatic, microprocessor-powered Switch-L HF Tuner. The device did away with manually tuned capacitors and inductors, automatically finding a match in seconds.

“The first LDG tuner appeared as a construction article in QST magazine (January 1996) and was available as a kit,” LDG’s website notes. “The article and kit were very popular and founder Dwayne Kincaid, WD8OYG, started LDG to build on the success of the design.”

Thirty years later, family-owned and operated LDG has grown into an amateur radio industry leader, offering its signature automatic antenna tuners with new tuning algorithms and upgraded components, such as the popular AT-1000ProII; tuner/remote control combos; SWR/wattmeters; UNUNs; baluns; and antenna tuner radio interface cables.

Several years ago, LDG and DX Engineering teamed up to offer the LDG Z-100A Automatic Antenna Tuner (160-6M) plus seven interface cables (Z-100A-DXE) covering many Alinco, Icom, Kenwood, and Yaesu transceivers.

Something New from LDG

LDG’s AAF5 represents the company’s entrance into the audio end of enhancing your on-air experience and making more QSOs.

The analog audio filter can be widely applied to many types of external audio processing equipment, including receivers and transceivers, to effectively reduce background noise by more than 10 dB, improve signal-to-noise ratio by 20 dB, and increase the overall signal readability on the RS and RST scales.

LDG says that the filter employs only analog circuits, resulting in better audio quality than its digital competitors. Featuring simple installation and easy-to-use Level, Lo Cut, and Hi Cut controls on the front panel, the AAF5 includes a Lo Cut filter frequency adjustment range of 50 Hz-500 Hz, a Hi Cut range of 500 Hz-10,000 Hz, >5W speaker output power, 150mW headphone driving power, 8-200 ohm headphone output impedance, 8-10 ohm input impedance, and 13.8 Vdc operating voltage. The manual provides suggested initial settings for use with CW, SSB, AM amateur, and AM broadcast.
