About Hiva Oa (IOTA OC-027)

This 124-square-mile island, the second largest of the 12 Marquesas Islands behind only Nuki Hiva, has a population of around 2,000.

Art history buffs will note that Paul Gauguin (1848-1903), a French post-impressionist artist and friend of Vincent Van Gogh, drew, painted, and sculpted on Hiva Oa, where he lived in a two-story thatched home and unsuccessfully fought French government officials during the last years of his life.

Revered Belgian songwriter Jacques Brel came to Hiva Oa in 1975 and, seduced by its beauty and tranquility, lived out his life there. He died in 1977 and is buried at the cemetery in Atuona on the southern side of the island, not far from where Gauguin was laid to rest. Brel’s most famous song, “Le Moribond” (“The Dying Man”), became a worldwide hit in 1974 with its English-language adaptation written by Rod McKuen, “Seasons in the Sun”, sung by Terry Jacks.

We’ll be featuring more about TX7N in the days ahead. From all of us at OnAllBands and DX Engineering, best of luck putting Marquesas in your logbook!
