Today’s Word of the Day column salutes the Yasme Foundation, an organization celebrating its 60th year of forging new frontiers in the world of Amateur Radio.
Led by Dick Spenceley, KV4AA (SK), the Yasme Foundation was originally organized in 1959 to support the DXpeditions of Danny Weil, VP2VB, who navigated the globe in various sailboats (all named Yasme) to give amateur operators the chance at logging All Time New Ones. Later, the foundation backed three decades of DXpeditions undertaken by legendary husband and wife team, Lloyd Colvin, W6KG (SK), andIris Colvin, W6QL (SK).
Run by a board of directors, the Yasme Foundation continues to build on the efforts of these Ham Radio pioneers by awarding grants and scholarships, helping to fund projects (e.g., upgrades to the International Space Station amateur radio station), and presenting the Yasme Excellence Award to individuals and groups that have made a significant contribution to Amateur Radio.
From its official website, “The Yasme Foundation is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation organized to support scientific and educational projects related to amateur radio, including DXing (long distance communication) and the introduction and promotion of amateur radio in developing countries. Yasme supports various projects relating to amateur radio, with an emphasis on developing amateur radio in emerging countries and encouraging youth participation in amateur radio.”
On behalf of all of us at DX Engineering, here’s to 60 more years of success!
