A Guide to May 2022 Ham Radio Contests

Excited about Dayton HamventionÒ 2022, Four Days in May, and Contest University? So are the active hams at DX Engineering! But take note: Hamvention (May 20-22), Four Days in May (May 19-22), and Contest University (May 19) aren’t the only games in town this month. There are a bunch of ways to make May memorable by getting on the air and participating in QSO Parties, RTTY opportunities, FT8 challenges, youth contesting, and other events. Here are a few highlights:

VHF-UHF FT8 Activity Contest: May 4, May 11, May 18 1700Z to 2000Z. Open to all licensed hams, this contest runs the first Wednesday of every month for 2M, the second Wednesday for 70cm, and the third Wednesday for 23cm. Its purpose according to event coordinators: “Increased activity will provide the possibility of working new DXCC or squares; also, can make use of short-lived propagation or even detect openings which otherwise can go unnoticed.”

56th Alessandro Volta Worldwide RTTY Contest: May 14, 1200Z to May 15, 1200Z. Hosted by the SSB and RTTY Club COMO and the Associazione Radioamatori Italiani, this annual event is designed to “increase interest in RTTY mode and to honor the Italian discoverer of electricity, Alessandro Volta.” Read contest rules here. A second and third round of the contest is scheduled for July 23 and December 30.
