Winter Field Day, sponsored by the Winter Field Day Association (WFDA), will take place the weekend of January 25 to 26, 2020. It’s a great opportunity for Amateur Operators to come together, spend time in the great outdoors, and put their emergency communication skills to the test.
Started in 2007, Winter Field Day isn’t exclusive to Hams in the Northern Hemisphere. Operators around the world are invited to participate in one of three entry categories—indoor, outdoor, and home. Operation takes place on all HF, VHF, and UHF bands except 12, 17, 30, and 60, and Hams are permitted up to 12 hours to set up stations prior to participation.
The 24-hour event offers an around-the-clock chance for operators to hone their radio skills and gain valuable experience in the kind of life-saving radio communications used during natural disasters. It’s also a great chance for those without a license to work with licensed operators to try out equipment and make their first contact.
Why not give it a try? You’ll get a leg-up on fellow Hams who limit participation to the warmer-weather Field Day in June and be that much better for the experience. Solo and group operation is encouraged, and if you aren’t up for portable operation or want to avoid the low temps, you can still join the action from the comfort of your shack.
